March 16-19, 2014:  GPLC Hosted National Adult Education Conference in Pittsburgh

1,200 representatives of adult education programs from around the U.S. attended this three-day event at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.  The event was planned and chaired by GPLC's own Lori Como, Program Director, who was honored with an award for her service to our state's adult education association.  Guest speakers included authors Mawi Asgedom,  Rob Shindler, and Archie Willard.  KDKA-TV's Ken Rice emceed a luncheon on March 19.  GPLC's national leadership was on display, with many excellent classes taught by our staff.  Below are a few photos of the conference.

March 11, 2014  PCN televison interview:  On the Issues with Don Block, GPLC Executive Director - Adult Literacy 

Donald Block, Executive Director of the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council, wants Pennsylvanians to know that there’s more to literacy than reading and writing.  According to the 2010 census, 710,000 adults aged 16-65 in the state don't have a high school diploma.  Mr. Block and his colleagues say a state funding trend over the last five years shows a fifty percent cut for literacy.
